In a notable development for the cryptocurrency and finance sectors, Ondo Finance has taken a bold step by becoming the first tokenization platform to integrate with the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation's (DTCC) Fund/SERV. Unlike many in the crypto industry striving to build alternatives from the ground up, Ondo's approach embodies a significant shift: it is embedding itself into the already established framework of the US mutual fund industry. This unique strategy may pave the way for wider adoption of tokenized assets while preserving existing financial systems.

Embedding into the existing financial framework

For years, the cryptocurrency space has been focused on creating an innovative alternative to traditional financial plumbing, including new blockchains and custom validators designed to address the limitations of Wall Street. However, Ondo Finance has deviated from this narrative by opting for a more integrative approach. By leveraging DTCC’s Fund/SERV, the company is effectively inserting itself into the machine that currently processes more than 85% of US mutual fund transactions.

Fund/SERV is responsible for essential operational tasks within the financial ecosystem, such as managing account-level data, providing transaction confirmations, handling reconciliation, and performing regulatory reporting. Through its subsidiary, Oasis Pro Markets, Ondo gains timely access to an extensive network of fund companies, wealth platforms, and service providers. Ian De Bode, Ondo’s Acting CEO and President, stressed that this type of integration simplifies transactions across the network. He stated: “Through a single standardized connection, Ondo’s subsidiary Oasis Pro Markets can transact with fund companies, wealth platforms, and service providers without requiring separate integrations. A key piece of infrastructure is now in place for tokenized funds to scale to mainstream adoption.”

The three settlement strategies in play

The current landscape of financial services sees three distinct settlement strategies coming to the forefront. The Circle Arc approach employs a new blockchain, fortified by institutional validators such as BlackRock and Visa, aiming for remarkably fast transaction finality. Meanwhile, Ripple’s RLUSD model aggressively seeks vertical integration through acquisitions and a push towards obtaining an Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) charter.

In contrast, the Ondo approach focuses on an “embedding” strategy that acknowledges the existing compliance framework as a beneficial feature rather than an obstacle. This enables Ondo to create a solid connection between digital assets and traditional distribution channels. Talia Klein, Managing Director and Head of Wealth & Investment Solutions at DTCC, highlighted the importance of this interoperability in evolving financial markets. “As financial markets continue to evolve, interoperability between traditional infrastructure and digital asset ecosystems will be critical to achieving scale and broad market adoption,” she mentioned. Klein emphasized that Ondo’s participation in Fund/SERV could facilitate further market innovation while adhering to trusted standards.

Ondo’s advantages in the tokenization space

Ondo Finance carries substantial weight within its industry, boasting a total value locked of approximately $3.5 billion to $3.6 billion across a variety of tokenized assets, including U.S. Treasury funds and equities. With a notable market share of 70% in tokenized equities, the platform offers a range of products, such as tokenized U.S. Treasury funds (OUSG) and dollar-yield notes (USDY). Furthermore, it provides access to over 430 tokenized U.S. stocks and ETFs through its Global Markets platform. However, it's worth noting that there is currently no specific timeline for launching any Fund/SERV-related products, and existing assets, including OUSG and USDY, are off-limits to retail investors within the U.S.

With the regulatory landscape being unpredictable—marked by the failed CLARITY Act and delays in the GENIUS Act's rulemaking—Ondo’s decision to work within the established DTCC framework is a strategic maneuver aimed at minimizing friction. The DTCC processed a staggering $4.7 quadrillion in securities transactions in 2025 and currently holds $114 trillion in custody across diverse assets from more than 150 countries, underscoring its dominance and reliability.

DTCC's evolving stance on tokenization

DTCC is not passive in this transformation either. The clearinghouse is actively developing its own tokenization services, buoyed by a December 2025 SEC No-Action Letter. Following production trades executed in July 2026 across more than 30 firms, DTCC has formed a partnership with Stellar, targeting further advancements in the first half of 2027. Importantly, Ondo’s membership in Fund/SERV complements rather than competes with DTCC’s own tokenization strategy. If DTCC’s tokenization service focuses on the infrastructure for custodial securities, Ondo's participation ensures a solid base for the distribution of tokenized funds.

This integration by Ondo suggests that achieving mainstream adoption for tokenized assets may not necessitate radical innovations but rather a steady commitment to enhancing compatibility with existing systems. In finance, the goal is often to make digital assets operate seamlessly alongside traditional ones, rendering the process both efficient and reliable.

Future directions for Ondo and tokenized assets

Looking forward, Ondo Finance's decision to embed within an established framework rather than create an alternative infrastructure could turn out to be a prudent strategy. As financial markets continue to evolve and more participants seek seamless access to digital assets, Ondo's capabilities may serve as a bridge that effectively links the traditional and digital realms. The unfolding narrative around tokenization will likely concentrate on compatibility, where the most disruptive element might be the capacity to serve existing financial structures rather than replace them.

The true test will be in execution, as Ondo works to translate integration into practical outcomes for tokenized funds. It stands at the crossroads of conventional finance and emerging digital innovations, equipped with positioning that may well redefine how these assets are distributed in the marketplace.
