Secret Network experiences 75% supply dilution to ensure future viability

In a significant recent governance-challenges-as-director-exits/">development, Secret Network executed a monumental supply dilution of 75% on August 21, motivated by urgent needs for survival after the abrupt departure of its main developer, SCRT Labs. This drastic action was prompted by the approval of Proposal 365, which aimed to maintain the operations of the Cosmos-based blockchain-and-uniswap-s-v4-updates/">Layer 1 blockchain amidst shifting leadership dynamics.

The effective mint reduced the existing supply base of SCRT to a mere 25.1% of its estimated total following the mint, marking a pivotal moment for the blockchain's community and governance.

Supply dilution as a survival strategy

The executed mint involved issuing 1.079 billion SCRT tokens, aimed at providing the necessary resources to support the network as its backers rushed to cope with SCRT Labs' decision to cease operational support after September 1.

Proposal 365 garnered backing from the network community and was designed to facilitate the version 1.26.0-community-continuance upgrade at block 26,790,327. This upgrade was done as a finalize-block event, meaning it didn't process regular user transactions along with the minting. Following the upgrade, the live secret-4 node confirmed the new software version 1.26.0 and achieved block 26,806,270, indicating the successful execution of the changes.

The critical aspect of this plan involved a restructured distribution of the new SCRT tokens. Out of the newly minted SCRT, 299 million were allocated to foundational and core-development programs, 178 million to an ecosystem fund, and additional specific amounts were designated for advisors, remediation, and validator compensation among others. The mint made 308.4 million SCRT liquid immediately, triggering an ongoing inflation rate of 5%.

Impact on existing holders and future prospects

While existing SCRT holders maintained their balances, the sheer volume of new supply diluted their stakes to about one-quarter of the overall holdings within the network. The mint was critical not only for immediate liquidity but also for establishing aligned incentives to stimulate community involvement in maintaining the network.

The backing behind Proposal 365 demonstrates a commitment from the community, who now bear the responsibility for the ongoing technical workload. The successful execution of the proposal signals a turning point; however, it leaves the future of Secret Network hanging in the balance, relying heavily on validator participation and sustained community engagement to keep operations steady.

Testing the commitment after September 1 cutoff

As SCRT Labs' decision to withdraw support nears fruition, September 1 marks the beginning of a more challenging phase for Secret Network. The operational sustainability of the blockchain hinges on whether community stakeholders can harness the newly minted resources efficiently to foster continued development and maintain validator interest.

The rejection of Proposal 360 by Secret Network voters heightened the stakes even further, as it outlined an alternative strategy that would have included a snapshot for the community's liquidity distribution. The proposal was rejected, and SCRT Labs made it clear that they would end their involvement regardless of this latest outcome.

The current market performance of SCRT

Despite the upheaval and significant supply changes, SCRT has shown resilience, bouncing back with a 2.75% increase in value over the past 24 hours. As of now, it ranks #1,111 by market capitalization in the constantly fluctuating crypto landscape. The dynamics over the coming weeks will prove vital not just in determining the short-term value but also in assessing the long-term viability of the Secret Network amidst evolving narratives in blockchain technology.

As the dust settles post-minting, the focus will shift to how effectively the community manages the operational and developmental demands of Secret Network in this new chapter of its existence.
