UBS expects Fed rate hikes due to strong jobs data, impacting Bitcoin's performance until year-end.
Recent robust jobs data has prompted UBS Global strategy-disrupts-crypto-market-with-low-cost-etfs/">Wealth Management to revise its outlook on Federal Reserve monetary policy, which may create additional challenges for Bitcoin in the coming months. As the Fed pivots to focus more on inflation, analysts believe this could lead to two interest rate hikes this year. This shift is important as it directly affects the appeal of Bitcoin, a non-yielding asset.
High employment figures lend support to inflationary pressures, prompting the Fed to adopt a more hawkish stance. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employers added 162,000 jobs in August, and the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%. The substantial growth in employment exceeds the average gain of 31,000 jobs recorded over the preceding year.
However, this job growth isn’t without its inconsistencies. Notably, sectors like food services saw gains with 59,000 new jobs, while education in local government areas fell by 23,000. Such disparities highlight ongoing frictions in the labor market.
With a resilient employment scenario, the Fed faces a crucial decision. As the job market strengthens, it gains more latitude to address rising inflation concerns while implementing a tighter monetary policy.
UBS's latest forecast predicts two Federal Reserve rate hikes this year, slated for September and December. This new perspective follows strong labor market data and reflects growing risks related to inflation stemming from various supply chain bottlenecks. Previously, UBS anticipated no significant changes to the current policy.
The likelihood of a 25 basis point increase has risen to approximately 58% ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on September 15–16, suggesting that investor sentiment is adjusting to the prospect of tighter monetary conditions. The anticipated hikes could translate into sustained pressure on Bitcoin as higher yields from Treasury securities become more attractive.
As Bitcoin attempts to maintain its foothold around $80,000, the resurgence of expected higher interest rates may impact its appeal as a risk asset. Currently trading at about $79,375, Bitcoin’s performance remains sensitive to macroeconomic conditions.
Higher interest rates can lead to elevated yields, which provide a more attractive option for investors. As a non-yielding digital asset, Bitcoin risks losing its allure if investors increasingly favor safe interest-bearing assets over speculative plays. Holding Bitcoin during periods of elevated rates introduces a significant opportunity cost for investors.
Moreover, the increased costs of borrowing introduce another concern. With higher financing rates, leveraging positions can become more challenging for investors, complicating capital deployments into the cryptocurrency space.
The upcoming inflation data, set to be released on September 11, will be crucial in determining the Fed's trajectory. Should inflation figures remain elevated, it would bolster the argument for further tightening measures, aligning with UBS’s forecast of increased rates.
On the other hand, if the inflation numbers cool, this could potentially offer some relief to Bitcoin and counteract some of the pressure exerted by rising rates. As the Fed enters a communications blackout until the meeting, market participants are left to interpret the implications of these impending data points.
The December meeting (scheduled for December 8–9) is also significant for the near-term future of Bitcoin. By then, the economic landscape could change considerably, impacting how the Fed may respond and what measures it may take.
The overall response from Bitcoin to the evolving macroeconomic landscape will hinge on how quickly investors adapt their expectations and consider the possible changes to rates. If market players have already internalized the potential for higher rates, it may lessen the shock of the upcoming Fed announcements.
However, if inflation persists at high levels, particularly with the robust job market, it becomes likely that policymakers like Governor Christopher Waller will advocate for more aggressive monetary action. This push could leave Bitcoin contending with challenging macroeconomic conditions.
The blend of external pressures and internal market sentiment will determine whether Bitcoin can reclaim its previous highs or if it will struggle to maintain its current levels through the year’s end.
As Bitcoin's current bearish trend persists, monitoring how inflation data influences Federal Reserve policy will be of paramount importance for investors and analysts alike.
